Congress Announces To Contest All Seven Lok Sabha Seats In Delhi, AAP Hits Back

In a political development that has sparked tensions between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, the latter has announced its intention to contest all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi during the upcoming national elections. 


The declaration, made by Congress leader Alka Lamba after a four-hour-long meeting attended by 40 party leaders, has drawn sharp reactions from the AAP.


Lamba stated, "We have been given orders to contest on all 7 (Lok Sabha) seats in Delhi." The meeting, convened by Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, focused on strategies to strengthen the Congress presence in Delhi.

Reacting to this announcement, AAP's chief national spokesperson, Priyanka Kakkar, expressed the party's displeasure, stating, "If Congress has already decided not to form an alliance with us, then it is of no use for us to attend the next 'INDIA' alliance meeting." She further mentioned that AAP's top leadership would decide whether to participate in the upcoming meeting.


Delhi's Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj emphasized that the decision about forming an alliance would be taken by their central leadership. He added that discussions within the political affairs committee and INDIA parties would help reach a conclusion about a potential poll alliance.


AAP leader Somnath Bharti called for unity and prioritization of the nation and constitution over personal ambitions. This exchange comes in the wake of recent disagreements between the two parties over the Delhi Services Bill proposed by the Centre. AAP demanded Congress to clarify its stance on the ordinance as a prerequisite for attending the INDIA alliance meeting. Although Congress eventually supported AAP in parliament, the bill was passed despite their efforts.

This discord between Congress and AAP echoes the events of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when talks of an alliance between the two parties broke down. Each party accused the other of stalling discussions. The Congress-AAP alliance had aimed to counter the Modi-Shah duo, but internal differences led to the collapse of the seat-sharing arrangement.
