The state government of Manipur faces criticism and worry over the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar at a time when ethnic violence is ongoing between the Kuki and Meitei groups. Nearly 800 unauthorised citizens of Myanmar entered Manipur in just two days, according to reports, during the upheaval. The state government has responded by taking a major step towards solving the problem by collecting biometric data from all illegal immigrants from Myanmar who have settled there.

The Manipur Home Department has stated that the collection of biometric data has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2023 (September). The goal of this measure is to keep tabs on and curb illegal immigration within the state.

On May 3rd, members of the Meitei community began demanding recognition as a scheduled tribe in order to get access to government job reserves, land, and other facilities that had traditionally been reserved for the Kukis.

Concerns have been raised about the possible smuggling of weaponry and ammunition after a high number of illegal immigrants were seen entering Manipur during the conflict.

In order to maintain peace and safety in the area, it is imperative that the state government take action to stop illegal immigration. Addressing the influx of undocumented migrants is considered as a step towards settling the issue and preventing potential security threats as the administration confronts criticism from the Opposition regarding the ethnic violence.

Authorities in Manipur are now collecting biometric data in an effort to exert more authority and guarantee the safety of locals. The state is nevertheless mired in ethnic tensions, making progress towards enduring peace and reconciliation difficult.
